What?
The Kids Creative Apprenticeship Program is a unique opportunity for high school students with a desire to learn and an interest in promoting peace and creativity in youth. The paid 10-week program* includes training and an opportunity for on-site learning through pairing apprentices with Teaching Mentors, veteran teachers, in an after-school Class. Apprentice’s will work one day a week at one of our sites and submit weekly journal entries. In addition to this first hand experience in using Kids Creative’s methods of community building through collaborative creation, students gain highly valuable job skills. Furthermore, qualified Apprentices will be eligible for an opportunity to work as a paid intern at our summer camp.
* For full participation, Apprentices will receive $100 for the Spring semester. - If an Apprentice misses 1 class they will receive $80
- If an Apprentice misses 2 classes they will receive $50
- Apprentices must attend all trainings and not miss more than 2 classes to remain in the program. Missed class time can be excused by working in the Kids Creative office, if necessary.
Apprentices who complete the full program by attending all trainings and classes and submitting weekly journals will be eligible to apply for the Kids Creative Summer Camp Apprenticeship, June 23, June 27, June 28 (training, 10 am-4 pm) and July 1 – Aug 9 (Summer Camp, 8:30 am-12:30 pm/12:30 pm -4:30 pm) and receive a stipend of $500.

Trainings
You will receive training led by our Program Director and Apprentice/Intern Coordinator in topics covering:
• The basics of creating safe and peaceful environments for children
• Working with children in an after-school and summer camp setting
• Community building, problem solving, and conflict resolution
• Kids Creative’s Summer Safety Plan
• The basics of working in a Kids Creative classroom
• Using Kid’s Creative’s Curriculum to create a musical play and promote community
Hands-On, On-Site Learning
Each of our apprentices will also be assigned to work with a Teaching Mentor, one of our veteran teachers, during an after-school class. They will get first-hand experience working in our program, get a chance to utilize the skills they are learning in their trainings and receive mentoring by one of our master teachers. Apprentices will be asked to fill complete a journal regarding their experience in the classroom and how it relates to their training.

Personal Qualities
Apprentices must have the following personal qualities:
- Thursday March 7: Orientation at Kids Creative Office
- Thursday March 14: Training at Kids Creative Office
- Thursday March 21: Training and observation in one of our after school programs
- Week of April 8: Assist in a classroom, in one of our after school programs
- Week of April 15: Assist in a classroom, in one of our after school programs
- Week of April 22: Assist in a classroom, in one of our after school programs
- Week of April 29: Assist in a classroom/on-site evaluation with Program Director
- Week of May 6: Assist in a classroom, in one of our after school programs
- Week of May 13: Assist in a classroom, in one of our after school programs
- Week of May 20: Wrap Up Week! Assist in classroom and final meeting at Kids Creative Office Thursday May 23*
REQUIREMENTS
Personal Qualities
Apprentices must have the following personal qualities:
- Be at least 16 years of age by July 2013
- Have experience with supervising children & enjoy working with them
- Have interest and experience in one or more forms of art and a love for the creative arts overall
- Be responsible, self motivated, open-minded and respectful of their peers, mentors and instructors
- Must be a role model for the students at their site and display all of the qualities that we seek to instill within our students, such as confidence, creativity, an ability to resolve conflicts peacefully and a love for art.
- Be confident expressing themselves creatively in front of children and can inspire children with their constant creativity
- Be excellent team players
- Know how to be silly, have fun with children, & not take themselves too seriously
- Apprentices must be able to commit to fulfilling the following requirements
- Must be able to complete the 10 week program
- Must be available for all trainings and at least 1 afternoon a week for work experience
